This original diptych ‘Colors: Mussels I & II” acrylic on canvas, created in 2021 was on view in several places here in Southern California before heading to the east coast for the Delaplaine Art Center’s National Juried Exhibition, Juror: Foon Sham – on view through July 9th, 2023. Back to the city I had my first solo show!! The Delaplaine embraced the work I was doing YEARS ago merging traditional and non traditional – using the computer as a tool. ‘See the Ocean’ started that whole process. I have always admired Foon Sham’s work as an artist as well as his ability to inspire young artists to push boundaries at the University of Maryland. I was so excited to submit new work sending these pieces back to a place where I learned so much. Back to the place I grew up ( I was born in Washington, D.C.). Moving West changed who I am as an artist, bringing with me the colors of a million memories, changing my point of view and the way I feel about what I am creating and why. Its an honor to have work in this particular exhibit at this particular time, at a place that was such a big part of not just my artistic endeavors but those of my family’s as well.
Both pieces were created with layer after layer of acrylic wash letting each layer dry and at the end of each painting session using the rinse water from my brushes soak in for the final layers while the pieces dried flat on the floor. Predominantly an oil painter exploring this process of creating zero waste has been a lot of fun and thought provoking on many levels.
“I think this is why your artwork is so moving. It touches on a “million memories” that are personal, meaningful, both fleeting and evocative!” Thank You!
“Color is a power which directly influences the soul.”
