Painted after walking on the beach in Cardiff, then stopping on the drive home for another walk in Del Mar. I always find sea glass at this beach so I wanted to look for treasures. As I walked I just remembered marveling at the changefulness of the vast Pacific. Where I started out earlier that day a further bit north on Coastal Highway 101 it was bright sunny and the water was turquoise and cerulean. In a few hours’ time the colors were dark blues, sapphires and emerald greens with the waves crashing against the rocks and grassy bluffs. I filled pages of my sketchbook with washes – colours capturing the coast I was seeing in those moments. I came home to my easel and a big canvas abstracting all that colour to complete the process of the painting, blending & dripping. It’s fun to just keep working and then WOW! It’s hard to explain but suddenly I will look at the painting hours, days, weeks sometimes months later and it’s done! I love layering color so sometimes it can take months as each layer dries. I wanted to capture the ocean meeting the sky at the horizon.
