“This exhibition celebrates the creativity and vision of artists from across our region, each offering a distinctive interpretation of The San Diego Museum of Art’s iconic Spanish Colonial Revival façade. Conceived as part of the Museum’s Centennial, Local Visions grew out of an open call that invited local artists to reimagine the Museum’s landmark exterior through their own contemporary perspectives. The response to the call was remarkable, with an inspiring range of proposals that demonstrated the depth of talent in our community. From these submissions, a selection of works was chosen to reflect both the diversity of artistic approaches and the shared sense of connection to this historic building.
Together, these works illuminate how a single façade can serve as both subject and symbol; honored, transformed, and reinterpreted in ways that bridge community and architecture, past and present, tradition and innovation.”
Description
Custom prints celebrating my installation in ‘Local Visions’ the San Diego Museum of Art’s Centennial Celebration! I chose to approach paintings of the façade with emphasis on color because my work is all about color I believe that “color is energy made visible” – honoring and celebrating time periods and seasons: morning, afternoon, evening and night – much how I set about to work on my larger compositions; celebrating the changefulness that is California – knowing that architects William Templeton and Robert Snyder were inspired in part by the Cathedral of Valladolid inspired my path toward Monet’s Cathedral series in part because Monet painted the cathedrals at different times of day. That in turn led me to Lichtenstein’s modern and graphic approach to the cathedrals with bold colors and “commercially influenced style”. Art museums are in fact, like church to me; they are a celebration of community – connection for a moment that can leave a lasting and lifelong impression. The installation consists of traditional oil paintings on canvas framed in classic gold frames prints on wood and acrylic with sketches done on site in the park, hoping to reflect the timespan from traditional to modern. Layers of painting to create depth on canvas and layers with the acrylic and standoffs to create depth, separation and shadows. Taking it further with the prints above using my sketches, paintings and digital imaging.
