‘Surfer Girl / Dawn Patrol’
I love watching surfers on the beach – memories of my own – summers with my best friend heading to the beach boogie boarding and body surfing in the waves from sunrise to sunset driving home salty, summer sun on our skin. We attend the US OPEN of Surfing every year and I sketch right on the beach or in a chair by my car with the trunk open. Our two oldest daughters surfed and swam competitively, and we shared our love for the ocean with all our children and now grandchildren; our granddaughter has a print of this piece in her room. Our son volunteering to photograph a surf event snapped a photo that I fell in love with and with his blessing, I made it my own. I loved that he photographed such a powerful athlete. I worked on this painting for, gosh two years off and on with lots of layering, light washes, shadows and detail in her hair. Color is everything in my work and this piece celebrated that in a way all its own. She is a study of the figure, color that defines shape and movement, those first footprints in the sand on a beautiful day looking toward the endless horizon. It was so much fun; I met so many wonderful people while working on this amazing piece. Some days while working out in our garage neighbors and visitors stopped and had a look asking about my work, someone even came to the door asking about the painting. I heard so many stories of who the painting reminded them of, big wave surfers, a young man told me about his sister who loved to surf and that the depiction could be her! She could be anyone and everyone. She was a banner celebrating local artists on Orange Avenue in Coronado and with that the stories continued. She brings about connection that I cherish and as I posted updates on Instagram again, the stories continued with all of the beautiful comments!
